The latest edition of the BlackBerry Pearl, the 8120 brings support for T-Mobile's Hotspot @Home service, which enables you to make calls from the GSM cellular network and then seamlessly transfer them to your Wi-Fi network. The Pearl 8120 continues to offer all the communication features that you've come to expect from Blackberry smartphones, including email served up by the BlackBerry Internet Service and a full menu of messaging options (SMS, MMS, and IM). Other features include a 2.0-megapixel camera with video capture, Bluetooth for both communication headsets and stereo music streaming, MicroSD expansion, digital audio player, speakerphone, and voice-activated commands and dialing.

More than just an email companion, the Pearl 8120 also offers a media player, 2.0-megapixel camera, and Wi-Fi connectivity--compatible with T-Mobile's HotSpot @Home. T-Mobile Service
With T-Mobile HotSpot @Home service, you'll effortlessly transition between Wi-Fi calling and T-Mobile's wireless network while you talk. You can get unlimited nationwide calls over Wi-Fi--at home via your wireless router or at any U.S. T-Mobile HotSpot. You can also use the HotSpot @Home service via most open, or unsecured, wireless routers, as well as any secured wireless router for which you have access to the password from the owner. This phone is compatible with the 802.11b/g Wi-Fi standard as well as the following wireless security protocols: WEP, WPA, and WPA2. Whenever you're not using a Wi-Fi network, this phone works just like a regular mobile phone, using your Whenever Minutes under your T-Mobile voice plan.

Additionally, this mobile phone operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 networks and can handle high-speed data connectivity via T-Mobile's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"). Quickly and accurately type messages thanks to the SureType enhanced predictive text typing technology. Phone Features
Weighing just 3.21 ounces and just 0.55 inches thin, the Pearl 8120 manages to fit a QWERTY keyboard onto the handset's slim frame. Each button on the keyboard shares two letters and the unit automatically determines which letter is the intended one based on what it predicts you are trying to spell. This unique predictive text technology, known as SureType, makes the Pearl 8300's diminutive size possible. SureType also learns the words you use most often, further enhancing your typing speed.

It sports a large 240 x 260 screen that supports over 65,000 colors--plenty of real estate to view your e-mails, Web browser content, messaging sessions, and attachments. The venerable BlackBerry trackwheel has been replaced on this model with an innovative four-way trackball placed below the screen. On the rear of the handheld, you'll find a 2.0-megapixel camera and a self portrait mirror. The handheld's MicroSD memory card slot is located inside the device, behind the battery. There's also a standard 3.5mm headset jack that can be used with the included headset, as well as a mini-USB port for data connectivity.

The Pearl 8120 features an updated visual interface and integrates a new font rendering technology that displays characters with enhanced legibility at even the smallest point sizes. The BlackBerry Browser is further improved with a new "Page View" option that displays a full web page on the screen along with a magnifying glass that allows the user to quickly and accurately point and zoom in on a specific area of the web page. It also provides quicker access to Bookmarks and History.

With BlackBerry push technology, you don't need to retrieve your e-mail. BlackBerry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be discreetly notified as new e-mail arrives. Support is also built-in for viewing e-mail attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, and PDF formats).

This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity, and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, audio/video remote control, and sending of vCard calendar and contact info. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. With Voice Activated Dialing (VAD), you just say the word and the 8120 can initiate a call with anyone in your contact list. Plus, you can use VAD along with the built-in speakerphone or with a Bluetooth headset for hands-free dialing.

The integrated media player allows you to create and edit playlists right on the handset. The Pearl 8120 also features a 2-megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom and enhanced flash. The new camera also supports video capture in two resolutions: 240x180 or 176x144 for sharing via MMS.

Messenger and Google Talk Productivity Tools: View and update your calendar, schedule appointments, checks your task list and more while you're on the go. Also includes a calculator, alarm clock and memo pad. What Customers Say About BlackBerry Pearl 8120 Phone, Titanium (T-Mobile):

My call log constantly erases. I've done numerous hard resets a master reset and even had T-Mobile update my device with newer software and the problems continue to exist. To make a long story short, the alarm function works when it wants. Some calls go directly to voicemail. I now have to rely on my Motorola phone which was ran over by my Nissan Armada to wake me up in the morning, Thanks a lot Blackberry. I have been late to work as a result of this. Sometimes the calendar reminders do not work at all.

Sometimes it doesn't work at all. What a P.O.S.The only pro about this phone is that the calendar and contacts sync with my Mac OS.To add insult to injury, T Mobile customer service sucks 8@.5. Tech support takes hours.

And tech support rarely helps (because of the a55/elbow thing).I thought I hated Cingular/AT&T customer service until I switched to T Mobile. Literlly.

1.0 out of 5 stars P.O.S., March 15, 2009By anonymous - See all my reviewsThe pearl is one of the, if not the worst, cell phones I have owned in 10 years.Within the first few months:-the trackball was working inconsistently-the red call-end/power button functioned only half the time-the headphone jack stopped working consistently. God forbid you experience a real problem--half of them don't know their a55 from their elbow.

At least at Cingular they don't put on a compassionate facade then dispense crappy service, they just cut straight to the crappy service. It takes 10 seconds for the phone to recognize that a headset is plugged it, which sucks when you're in the middle of a call.

They only get good reviews because they sound cheerful on the phone and act like they care.

This unit was under a year old. There are many better options and a whole lot less stress. I have two Blackberry devices on my plan. This the charging mechanism for the device and when it goes, it is gone. Don't waste your money on any blackberry (even the storm). After being without a phone for over a month, I finally get it back NOT repaired stating customer abuse. There are 50 pages on google on the USB failing.

Setup is a pain and almost unmanageable for a novice. The operating system on the blackberry is the most poorly designed I have ever seen.

Good luck getting anything fixed under warranty. Blackberry has the arrogant mentality that they are the only game in town.

The 8100 and the 8130 and both have had the USB connections break. The Blackberry USB is just poorly designed.

Prediction: BB=chapter 11 three years. I didn't buy insurance on the 8100 thinking there was a year warranty.

They then charged me $55.

There's also a blackberry instant messaging service (along with AIM and MSN I believe) which you can use to IM other blackberry users but I didn't really get much use out of it since I didn't know anyone else with a blackberry at the time, so to me it was pretty pointless. And as far as the MP3 player, I also can't give my opinion on that because I have an ipod so I never used it.Now, some good things about the Pearl:It has a nice, crystal clear screen which is great (but I prefer the screen on the sidekick because its bigger) and it also has a great camera that takes some nice pictures (this is the one thing I prefer about the blackberry over the sidekick because the sidekick doesn't have too good of a camera)Okay so really, when it comes down to it, I never had any major problems with the pearl, it was just those minor things I didn't like about it, and the fact that I didn't feel it was the phone for me. Turning it on takes a while)The email service is okay, which I know is the main thing a lot of people like to use blackberrys for. But in my opinion, that's one of the only good things about it. So I'm not dissing all blackberrys and im not saying that you shouldn't buy one (in fact, I'm actually thinking of getting a blackberry curve) I'm just saying that I didn't see anything special about the pearl itself, and think that a sidekick is the better choice if you love texting as I do. (Yes in this review I will be comparing it to the sidekick a lot which may annoy some of you, but I know a lot of people who can't decide between a blackberry and a sidekick)First of all, I didn't like the suretype keyboard. Ill admit, I was never interested in blackberrys until I saw the blackberry pearl.

Sleek and shiny and smaller than any of the other blackberrys. I'm not a big email person myself, so I don't really have an opinion on it. I've always been more of a sidekick fan (which I still am by the way) but I first decided to go with the blackberry pearl over a sidekick because A) I got it for free off of a website with a new T-mobile contract and b) I loved the way it looked. As many people say, it takes some getting used to, and even though it didn't take me too long to get the hang of it, it just wasn't very convenient for an avid texter such as myself (which is what I love about the sidekick, the fact that it has an awesome keyboard for texting) another thing that I didn't like about the keyboard is the buttons, which are made of a flimsy material (in my opinion) and after only a short time of use, the letters started fading.I also didn't like the internet service, which was very slow in my opinion (I know a lot of people say that sidekicks also have a slow web browser but I'm satisified with the speed of the browser on mine) and in fact, I think the phone was just slow in general (I.E. (I'd reccommend the curve to you also because I love how it has more of a keyboard than the pearl but seeing as how I've never owned one myself, I won't be giving any advice on it) It really is a nice looking phone.

After only having the phone for a few months, I decided to upgrade to a sidekick.

It surfs the net quickly, the email service is best in class, and the phone is good. The net service is (again) very quick - and many main stream websites offer BB icon/shortcut downloads that speed things up even more.

The battery life is limited and the documentation that comes with this is bad. The wifi service is also very good, much quicker than I thought it would be and (to my surprise) I use it alot more than I thought I wouldDownsides - the keyboard is not a full qwerty keyboard and typing a long email is tedious.

I like this bb. The unit is small and light.

I learn about the features of this unit from other bb users - not from the cd or manual. It has a LOT of features - truly amazing.

The speaker phone is very good, the camera takes passable photos, the video camera is ok, and the mp3 player is good.
